She had the $100 question

Christine Abadilla of Kona likes to help people. You can see that in the question she wanted to ask presidential candidates in the last election:

"What will you do about the homeless people who are cold out there without any place to sleep?"

For that question she was named one of 52 nationwide winners in a "Weekly Reader" contest.

"I saw poor people on the road," Christine explained.

She spent the $100 she won in the contest on food and school supplies, she said.

Janet Motooka, Christine's teacher last year, said she came to school as much as an hour early every day to help.

Christine would do things like file papers and alphabetize things. "She spoiled me, because I don't have her this year," Motooka said.

The daughter of Jholito and Ofelia Abadilla, Christine seemed very shy, Motooka said.

But that may be changing. When the Polynesian Cultural Center put on a performance at the school and asked for volunteers, Christine went up on stage to dance, she said.

Christine says she wants to be a doctor.

"I want to help," she said.

When she told her father, he answered, "That's a good job."

Motooka says Christine's grades haven't been outstanding, but that wouldn't stop her from being a doctor. "She has that desire, that 'get up and go' to do," Motooka said.
