Celebrate in Hollywood

Want to see the stars and "Oscar" in style but can't afford airfare to Hollywood or get that invitation to the Academy Awards?

Head for Planet Hollywood in Waikiki 7 to 11 tonight to watch Tinsel Town's annual award ceremony surrounded by seven BIG screen televisions while enjoying a buffet and beverages in a benefit for the Diamond Head Theatre and The Shooting Stars Youth Performing Academy.

Every guest will receive an Oscar nomination at the door. If the star wins, then you win. The Grand Prize winner flies to Planet Hollywood Maui for lunch.

Maui celebrates chiefs

A three-day arts and cultural festival featuring a special hula production and music by Henry Kapono, The Makaha Sons, Sistah Robi and Eric Gilliom will be held Friday through Sunday at the Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua on Maui.

The Fifth Annual Celebration of the Arts -- "Na Alii O Maui" (A Tribute to the Chiefs of Maui) includes workshops, demonstrations, and works by more than 40 local artists, including Sue Nash, Kay Sattler, Fred Ken Knight, and Betty Hay Freeland.

A highlight of the festival is the Hawaiian Food Celebration Luau and "Kahekili," Hokulani Holt-Padilla's second theatrical hula production featuring Keali'i Reichel, Akoni Akana, Charles Kaupu and Cliff Ahu Friday. The food fest begins at 5 p.m., the "Kahekili" at 8 p.m.

Maui's Na Kumu Hula and their halau join together for the original theatrical hula premiere which depicts the life of one of the last great ruling chiefs of Maui, "Kahekili," with interpretative performances by Holt-Padilla, Reichel, Akoni Akana, Cliff Ahue and Charles Kaupu.

Tickets for "Kahekili" are $15 in advance and $20 at the door; $10 for children 12 and under. For the luau and "Kahekili" tickets are $65 and $45 for children 12 and under.

The music continues at 7:30 p.m. Saturday with Kapono and The Makaha Sons, Sistah Robi and Gilliom. Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 at the door; $15 for children 12 and under.

Hands-on demonstrations and workshops are scheduled throughout Saturday and Sunday on hula, chant, feather art, lauhala weaving, primitive fired clay, paper making, oil painting, watercolors, wood-working and children's games. Hula will be performed throughout the weekend in the Hawaiian Medicinal Garden and the lobby.
