Cops unlikely to set up
roadblocks for uninsured

Can police set up roadblocks to find uninsured motorists? If it's unconstitutional, why are they allowed to set up roadblocks for drunken drivers?

DUI (driving under the influence) roadblocks are allowed by state statute. A new law would be needed to allow roadblocks to screen for uninsured motorists, said HPD Maj. Gary Dias, head of the traffic division.

"This would be a very costly venture, both financially and in manpower resources," he said.

He noted that when DUI roadblocks are set up, "We ask to see drivers license, vehicle registration and insurance card" for each motorist stopped. "If a motorist is found to have an expired insurance card or does not have one, a citation is issued," he said.
