Likeke R. McBride's "Petroglyphs of Hawai'i," first published in 1969 and reprinted 12 times, has been an essential field guide to the mysterious carvings. Now comes a revised and updated version, published by the aptly named Petroglyph Press of Hilo. Writings on the wall
McBride passed away in 1993. The new edition is largely the original text with notations and additions updating the reader about petroglyph locations and studies. McBride's son Andrew McBride assisted in the revision, recalling field trips with his father.
The new addition also contains updated maps and directions to petroglyph sites, and a new forward co-written by publisher Christine Reed and archaeologist Catherine Glidden.
McBride the elder was well known as a storyteller in the old Hawaiian tradition. He also wrote and illustrated "About Hawaii's Volcanoes," "The Kahuna, Versatile Mystics of Old Hawai'i," "Pele, Volcano Goddess of Hawai'i" and "Practical Folk Medicine of Hawai'i."
"Petroglyphs of Hawai'i" is $7.95 and available at most Hawaii bookstores and gift shops.
