A kids' Oreo recipe contest and kids' Oreo stacking contest are open to youngsters 12 and younger. Prizes include $20,000 savings bonds, Florida trips, a year's supply of Oreos and -- for finalists who can stack 85 Oreos in 85 seconds -- $1 million.
Fifteen thousand U.S. supermarkets stage stacking-contest preliminaries June 23 to Aug. 3. National finals are in October at Universal Studios Florida.
Judging criteria in the recipe contest are originality, creativity, flavor, appearance and meaningful use of Oreos. Entry deadline is Aug. 3. Call (888)-EAT-OREO.
Best buys this week:Chinese peas, please, at best-buy prices of $1.79 a pound at IGH (Independent Grocers of Hawaii stores) and $2.99 at Safeway. Other produce bargains include asparagus for $1.49 a pound at Safeway, extra fancy Red Delicious apples for 59 cents at IGH, and Fuji apples at three for $1 at Times Super Market.
Also, fresh ahi tombo costs $4.98 a pound at Foodland, and at Safeway a'u (marlin) is $4.99 and boneless crossrib roast, $1.99.
