Ishida, 74, promoted
friendship with Japanese

By Star-Bulletin staff

George S. Ishida, local construction executive and retired U.S. Army major who served with the Military Intelligence Service after World War II, died Thursday in Tripler Hospital. He was 74.

George Takabayashi recalled that Ishida served with the counterintelligence corps with the U.S. occupational force in Yokohama from 1946 to 1949. He was later commissioned as an engineer officer and served eight more years in Japan, Takabayashi added.

After retiring from the Army Corps of Engineers in 1965, Ishida was appointed executive director of the Cement & Concrete Products Industry of Hawaii and retired as its president. He also served on the city’s Building Board of Appeals in the 1970s.

He was president of the Lakeside Community Association and managing director of the Masonry Institute of Hawaii.

Ishida also was a president of the United Japanese Society and Okayama Ken Jin Kai; a member of the Farrington High alumni board; chairman of Omote Senke Domonkai; board of governors, Japanese Cultural Center; and vice chairman, Immigrant Heritage Preservation Center.

Last year, Ishida was awarded the “Order of the Sacred Treasure” -- a medal in recognition of his efforts during his 20-year career with the U.S. Army to promote friendship between Japanese and Americans stationed in Japan.

He continued those efforts as president of the United Japanese Society and other community organizations.
