Helping country homebuyers

Marlene Lum expects the new 100 percent residential loan program at American Savings Bank to help people in rural areas on Oahu. The "RHS" loan conforms to federal Rural Housing Service standards, and is available only in certain areas.

"Our RHS loan can be used (for home purchases but not refinances) in the North Shore, Ewa Beach, Kapolei, Kahuku and Waimanalo areas," Lum said.

Lum watches over 11 bank branches as Leeward regional vice president. She joined the bank in 1973 as a teller and moved up the ranks to become vice president of residential loan administration.

Lum is a board member of the Real Estate Appraiser Advisory Committee and the Variety Club School which helps children with disabilities. She also finds time at home to make teddy bears, using mohair from Europe. Her company name is Bashful Bruin & Cubpany.
