What ever happened to plans for a new elementary school in Waikele? When, if ever, will construction begin? Waikele Elementary
is being builtThose plans are very much alive and on schedule, says state public works engineer Gordon Matsuoka.
Construction began March 3, when crews started putting up fencing to mitigate noise and dust in the area, he said. The school is still expected to be completed by May 1998 and open for students that September, he said.
Waikele Elementary will occupy six acres on Kukula Street. The project was bid at $8.9 million.
The school will accommodate as many as 750 students on a traditional school calendar but could take hundreds more if it adopts a year-round, "multitrack" calendar, officials say.
