Report rowdy roosters
to Humane Society

I have a problem with a neighbor and his crowing chickens. He has several in his yard and they start making noise at 3, 4 in the morning. I am a nervous wreck because I cannot sleep. What can I do?

The Hawaiian Humane Society handles animal nuisance complaints. Call 946-2187, extension 280, and it will investigate. You can remain anonymous.

Inspectors "will talk to the person first and check on the problem," said spokeswoman Eve Holt. "Depending on the kind of evidence you give, they will determine if there is problem."

Most such problems are resolved before they escalate into a court battle, she said.

The number of animals, as well as the racket they make are both covered by the animal nuisance law. There is a two-chicken limit in a residential area, while illegal noise -- a barking dog or crowing rooster -- is anything that goes on constantly for 10 minutes or intermittently for half an hour.
