Seventh AIDS Walk raises
$80,000 for Life Foundation

Dr. Jennifer Frank, 51, of Moiliili, finished the 5K AIDS Walk around Kapiolani Park yesterday on an upbeat and purposeful note.

The seventh annual event was a benefit for the Life Foundation, Hawaii's oldest and largest nonprofit agency that provides free support services for people with HIV and AIDS.

"I've been a supporter of the Life Foundation for a long time," said Frank, who served as Life Foundation president in 1991.

Money raised by the AIDS Walk/Run will be used for education about AIDS and support for people who have the disease, Frank said.

Organizers said about 2,000 participants completed the route, including 165 runners. More than $80,000 was raised for the foundation.

Big Island quake began
under volcano's vent

A moderate but widely felt earthquake shook parts of the Big Island early yesterday.

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory say the 4:19 a.m. quake was centered about 21/2 miles southeast of the Pu'u 'O'o vent of Kilauea Volcano.

It occurred at a depth of five miles and registered 4.4 on the Richter scale.

Residents as far away as Waimea felt the jolt. No damage or injuries were reported.

Hawaii to get $13 million more
each year for highways under Clinton plan

WASHINGTON -- Hawaii would get more money for highway projects, but a smaller share of the overall federal pot, under a 6-year transportation spending plan announced by President Clinton.

Clinton proposed spending a total of $175 billion, $17 billion more than over the past six years, on the nation's highways, bridges and mass transit systems.

Hawaii would receive an average of $138.4 million a year, about $13 million per year more than during the past six years.

But Hawaii's share of the funds would drop from 0.73 percent to 0.69 percent under Clinton's proposal, a relatively steep drop exceeded by only a handful of states.

Firefighters responded at 2:34 p.m. The boy was taken to Queen's Hospital and transferred later to Kapiolani Hospital.

Man sought for beating,
assault, kidnapping

Police are seeking a 20-year-old man in the reported beating, sex assault and kidnapping of a 22-year-old bar hostess in rural Waimanalo.

The man asked the woman for a ride home and then directed her to a secluded spot at about 2:30 a.m. yesterday, police said.

After refusing his request for sex, the man allegedly beat the woman, dragged her into a building and sexually assaulted her.

She was able to break free, but the suspect chased her down in a vegetable garden and sexually assaulted her again.

After dropping off the man in Kalihi, the woman reported the attack to police. The suspect is still at large.
