Takeya Dance Co. debuts

Japan's Keiko Takeya Contemporary Dance Company will make its American debut April 26 at the Hawaii Theatre Center.

The troupe, selected for the appearance by Dances We Dance artistic director Fritz Ludin, has been hailed as "uninhibited and stunning" by the Asahi Evening News.

Takeya founded her company in Tokyo in 1983 to transcend the conventional boundaries of modern dance, and to find new modes of expression in Asian cross-cultural dance theater productions. She has collaborated with artists from Indonesia, Thailand and Malaysia, as well as artists in theater, music, butoh and visual arts.

Takeya made her own dance debut in 1975 with the Martha Graham Dance Company in New York, and has choreographed works for the Hong Kong City Contemporary Dance Company, the Beijing Opera Institute, the Pusan Summer Dance Festival and Europe's Avignon Festival and Athens Festival.

Tickets are on sale 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seek days at the center box office, 1130 Bethel St., at $16, $25 and $30. Wheelchair seating may be requested. Tickets are also at Connection outlets (with service charge): Tempo Music, House of Music, University of Hawaii Campus Center, Jelly's and the Waikiki Beachcomber Hotel MTI desk. Charge tickets at 545-4000.

In addition, Takeya will be performing a week of outreach programs with lecture-demonstrations, master classes and forums benefitting Oahu's youth, from April 21 through 25.
