






COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Two Hawaii boxers, Jason Tomlin of Oahu and Rey Ferrer of Maui, advanced to today's semifinal round at the U.S. Boxing Championships yesterday. Two Hawaii boxers in semifinals
Ferrer won by decision over Robert Benson in the 125-pound weight class. Tomlin also won by decision, over Robert Aucoine, in the 147-pound weight class.
Carl Phillips of Wahiawa lost his quarterfinal match to Kenito Drake at 132 pounds. Wayne Cambra of Honolulu lost to Carl Gathright in the heavyweight quarterfinals.
UH GOLFERS SECOND: The University of Hawaii men's golf team placed second at the University of San Diego's Ashworth Invitational tournament.
Hawaii's three-round team total of 887 was eight strokes off the pace of Central Florida in the 18-team field.
Four Hawaii golfers finished in the top 20, led by Ronn Miyashiro, who tied for sixth with a 73-69-79-221. Van Wright tied for 12th at 222; Jarrod Mizusawa and David Kan tied for 20th at 224.
CHANG SIGNS WITH BRADLEY: Lindsay Chang, a 5-foot-7 outside hitter from Punahou, has signed a letter of intent to compete for the Bradley University women's volleyball team next season.
Chang hit .378 for the season, including .429 in the state tournament. The Buffanblu went 37-0 en route to the state title.
Bradley is coached by Kamehameha graduate Kalani Mahi.
PANA SIGNS WITH VULCANS: Four-year Hilo starter April Pana, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation's player of the year, has signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball for the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
FITNESS CHALLENGE: The Strend Fitness Challenge world championships will be held at Bodelon Field at Camp H.M. Smith in Halawa, on March 21.
The competition will feature six events: bench press, pull-ups, shoulder press, chin-ups, bar dips and a 3-mile run.
Last year's men's winner, Sonki Hong, and women's winner, Peedi-Jean Saldania, will return to defend their titles.

KONA SOFTBALL CLASSIC: The University of Hawaii at Hilo is hosting the Kona Softball Classic March 20-22 at the Old Kona Airport Softball Fields.
Teams entered are St. Xavier (Ill.), St. Mary's (Texas), Point Loma Nazarene (Calif.), Brigham Young-Hawaii, Chaminade, Hawaii Pacific and the Vulcans.
