
Get ready for St.Patrick's with best buys like corned beef, Island Fresh head cabbage and Northwest russet potatoes. It's time for wearin the green
and cookin' the corned beefIrish eyes smile on corned beef at 85 and 88 cents a pound for Maka'i Club members at Sack N Save and Foodland, respectively ($1.19 for non-club members).
Elsewhere, corned beef is 99 cents a pound at Star Markets; $1.19 at Sack N Save and Safeway; and at Times Super Market, $1.49 for Royal Card holders and $1.79 for others.
To round out that holiday meal:Harvest cabbage at 19 and 25 cents a pound for Maka'i Club members at Sack N Save and Foodland, respectively (29 cents for non-members).
It's 3 pounds for 99 cents at Daiei through Saturday; and 39 cents a pound at Foodland, IGH (Independent Grocers of Hawaii), Safeway and Star.
Rustle up some russets at a produce best-buy 5 pounds for 88 cents at Daiei. Gem potatoes are 5 pounds for $1.09 at IGH and, at Times, 3 pounds for 99 cents to Royal Card holders and 59 cents a pound for others.
For a delectable St. Patrick's Day dinner Monday, cover the corned beef with boiling water and simmer, allowing one hour per pound, until a fork can penetrate the center. Thinly slice the beef diagonally across the grain.
Classic accompaniments include boiled potatoes and cabbage wedges, simmered with the corned beef during the last 15 minutes of cooking.
If desired, add boiled pearl onions, carrots, beets, Brussels sprouts (on sale at Safeway for $1.69 a pound) or other vegetables. Serve with mustard or horseradish-laced white sauce.
And, for a bit o' green, slice fresh kiwi fruit at a best-buy five for $1 at Daiei, and four for $1 at Foodland and three for 99 cents at Times.
