A&B plans to build
975 homes in N. Calif.

Alexander & Baldwin Inc. plans a 975-home residential community on about 1,800 acres of land that the company has owned since 1962 in El Dorado County in Northern California.

The Honolulu-based company said it has begun seeking final county government approvals for the project, called Pilot Hill Ranch.

The company's property subsidiary, A&B-Hawaii Inc., is managing the project. A&B began its residential developing in Kahului, where it built more than 3,500 homes between 1950 and 1990. A subsidiary built the Wailea Resort community on Maui in the 1970s and 1980s.

Isle leaders to discuss
state's poor economy

Hawaii business and government leaders are meeting next week to discuss ways to jump-start the state's economy.

The Hawaii Developers Council is hosting a half-day seminar Wednesday that will focus on short- and long-term measures to stimulate the economy.

Scheduled speakers include David Bess, dean of the University of Hawaii's College of Business Administration; City Councilman Mufi Hannemann; state Sen. Sam Slom; Bruce Coppa, director of Pacific Resource Partnership, a labor organization; William J. Wilson, Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co. chief executive; and Richard Kelley, chairman of Outrigger Enterprises.

The seminar, which begins at 7:30 a.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel, is open to the public. Cost for HDC members is $10 in advance and $15 at the door. For nonmembers it is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. For information call Mari at 593-5517.

UH sponsors seminar
on using the Internet

Businesses that want to learn about the Internet can attend a workshop Friday at the University of Hawaii-Manoa.

The UH Masters of Business Administration alumni group and other affiliated associations will hold a discussion on "Using the Internet to Add Value to Your Company" at 4 p.m. in Building A, Room 301, at the UH College of Business Administration, 2404 Maile Way.

Speakers include William Chismar, associate professor and chairman of Decision Sciences. Chismar will discuss the roles the Internet can play in business strategy and operations. Charles Wall, vice president and chief information officer for Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc., and Daryl Hansen, founder of Aloha Discount Guide, will give perspectives on how companies are using the Internet. Chief Executive Officer Stephen Bollenbach, whose billion dollar deal-making has made Hilton the largest hotel and gambling company in the United States, received more than $1 million in cash and $40 million in stock options for his work in 1996, according to documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
