Starbucks Coffee plans to open new stores at the Ward Village Shops in Kakaako and at the Maui Marketplace in Kahului.

Coffee Partners Hawaii, the local licensee for Seattle-based Starbucks Corp., today said it will open its Kakaako location in July and its Maui outlet in May.

The stores will be Starbucks' second and third outlets in Hawaii and will create 40 to 50 jobs. The company opened its first Hawaii store in December at Kahala Mall.

The 1,433 square-foot Ward Village store is part of landowner Victoria Ward Ltd.'s redevelopment of its Kakaako holdings. Last April, Computer City opened a 16,000-square-foot store at Ward Village, following the 1995 opening of Borders Books & Music across the street at Ward Centre. Long-term, Victoria Ward and Simon DeBartolo Group Inc. plans to develop a $200 million shopping center at the site of Ward Warehouse.

Mitch D'Olier, Victoria Ward's chief executive officer, said that the new Starbucks, which will include an outdoor courtyard, would be a big attraction to local residents and tourists. Other coffee stores in the area include Coffee Works and Mocha Java Cafe.

The 1,700-square-foot Maui Marketplace store will be Starbucks' first neighbor island store. The Maui Marketplace was built by local developer Duncan MacNaughton, who is a partner in Coffee Partners.
