Akebono, Musashimaru
share top spot

OSAKA, Japan - Wakanohana, seeking promotion to sumo's highest rank, improved his record to 2-0 today, the second day of the 15-day Spring Grand Sumo Tournament.

Yokozunas (grand champions) Takanohana and Akebono, and Wakanohana's fellow ozekis (champions), Musashimaru and Takanonami, also scored their second victories.

Akebono, or Chad Rowan from Hawaii, slapped down komusubi (junior champion second class) Tosanoumi (1-1).

Musashimaru, or Fiamalu Penitani from Hawaii, held off No. 4 maegashira Kotoryu's two arm throw attempts and forced him out.

No. 12 maegashira Yamato, or George Kalima of Hawaii, drove No. 14 maegashira Minatofuji to the ring's edge, but Minatofuji fought him off and threw him down for his second victory against no defeats. Yamato is 0-2.

No. 10 maegashira Konishiki, or Salevaa Atisanoe from Hawaii, who missed two bouts because of flu, is to join the competition today, meeting No. 7 maegashira Kitakachidoki (0-2).
