Matsuura, retired 'warrior,'
to build a center for peace

HILO -- Speaker after speaker at a testimonial for retired state Sen. Richard Matsuura yesterday called him a samurai, a warrior -- but Matsuura told well-wishers he wants to be remembered as a man of peace.

Speaking in Japanese, A&O Corp. President Keiichiro Asaoka said he was making available 500 acres at Pohoiki, 25 miles south of Hilo, for Matsuura's dream: a peace and wellness center.

Matsuura's son Peter said a planned golf course would still be part of the center, where his father envisions world political, business and scientific leaders spending a week or more at a time getting to know each other.

Matsuura, 65, was diagnosed in December with cancer of the pancreas which had also spread to other parts of his body.

Kauolu facility seeks developer

WANTED: a developer to build a health care facility as an integral part of the Kauolu senior community in Waipahu.

Stan Fujimoto, state Housing Finance and Development Corp. project coordinator, says, "This part hopefully will be a small medical office facility which will complement the seniors and special-needs residences in this community."

The other hope is that the project will help the economy.

The estimated cost of this project is about $6 million, he said. "We hope this adds some stimulus."

The developer would build and own the building with height up to 25 feet on a 1.39-acre lot within the state's 22.5-acre master-planned senior community.

A medical office complex, assisted-living facility or any other complementary commercial/housing project will do.
