International trip

The theme is "Voyages" and the event is the 1997 International Festival, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. March 18 to 21 at Kapi'olani Community College. Most of the events are free and open to the public.

They include an exhibit and spiritual ceremony by artist Phan Nguyen Barker called "Women's Beauty, Women's Fate: Myths and Metaphors," lectures and discussions by kumu hula Kalani Akana, Kamuela Chun, Mililani Allen, Michael True of the Matsunaga Peace Center, Peter Xenos of the East West Center, and artist Patrick Ching.

Nonfree events include a "Polynesian Luau," on March 21, at $15 in advance, $20 at the door; and "A Night in India" April 3 and 4, $40.

Maria Clara feted

The Maria Clara Club, founded in 1947, celebrates its golden anniversary this year as the Hawaii Filipino Women's Club. The event will be marked at the annual Terno Ball, 6 p.m. March 22 at the Hibiscus Ballroom in the Ala Moana Hotel.

Founded by Angeles Avecilla, the club began as an affiliate of the YWCA and supports a variety of social needs. The ball helps perpetuate traditional Filipino clothing such as the Terno and the Barong Tagalog.

The subject is Schubert

"Schubert's Great Songs" is a 7 p.m. March 21 workshop hosted by Gary Hickling that examines the German composer's compositions.

The Hawaii Public Radio-sponsored workshop takes place in the Atherton Performing Arts Studio on Kaheka Street.

The cost is $15 per person; $12.50 for HPR members.
