Viking publishes
Hawaii author's novel

Hawaii writer Nora Okja Keller explores the mother-daughter relationship in her first novel, "Comfort Woman," due April 3 from Viking Penguin.

Keller, a former Star-Bulletin staffer, developed the novel from her short story "Mother Tongue," which won a Pushcart Prize in 1995.

"Comfort Woman" is told in the voices of Beccah, a young Korean-American woman, and her spiritually tortured mother, Akiko.

Beccah learns that Akiko had been a "comfort woman" forced to service Japanese solders during World War II.

The Jan. 6 Publishers Weekly review of "Comfort Woman" calls it "a striking debut by a strongly gifted writer."
