City makes homeowners remove litter from yards

I live in Aina Haina. There are three homes on Lawelawe Street which have old inoperable cars in their yards and garage and piles of lumber. It's really a mess. I'm sure there must be rats. We pay such high taxes in Aina Haina. Can't the city or state make them clean up their yards?

Complaints like yours should be directed to the city Building Department at 527-6308. You can remain anonymous.

Inspectors were sent to the three addresses you provided and found violations at all three, said William Deering, head of the department's Housing Code section.

At one home, the owner was cited for litter and for a derelict car. A citation also was issued for an extensively damaged wooden fence. The owner was told to repair it or remove the damaged portion, Deering said.

At the second home, a citation was issued for litter - an accumulation of newspapers, aluminum cans, etc. The owner also was told to repair extensively damaged portions of a garage, laundry, patio and lean-to shed, Deering said.

At the third home, a citation was issued for litter - basically dry leaves, cuttings, aluminum cans, etc., he said.

Notices went out in late February, with the owners given 30 days to make corrections. If they do not comply, the matter would be referred to the city prosecutor's office, Deering said.

In some cases, the department itself can issue civil fines, he said, which would be $50 for the first 30 days after noncompliance, and $50 per day thereafter.
