Moiliili native John Bully Tavares lived across the street from a field of dreams where he coached youth baseball for nearly half his life.He used to buy gloves and shoes for kids who couldnt afford to buy their own, Conrad Passas Sr. said, referring to Tavares, longtime Moiliili Vikings Athletic Club coach who died Saturday at age 69. He was a helluva guy.
The nickname came from his grandmother -- because he weighed 14 pounds at birth -- but Tavares was anything but a bully.
He was a low-key person who really enjoyed working with kids, said retired Punahou School teacher and coach David Eldredge, who also coached in the Vikings program.
Tavares, who lived on the corner of Isenberg and Young streets, returned home from work one day in 1962 and saw a sad group of 15 youngsters sitting together at Moiliili Field. They had just been cut from the Vikings baseball team.
Tavares and two of his friends volunteered to coach the group and his first Viking team finished third in their Police Activities League division that season.
John always taught his players that baseball was like life, Passas said. You never quit until the final pitch crosses the plate into the catchers glove.
Tavares teams dominated PALs Pony (ages 13-14) level in the 1970s, winning eight titles and finishing second twice.
His teams won four more titles in the 80s before Tavares left to coach junior varsity baseball at St. Louis School from 1990-94.
Survivors include his wife, Dora; son Gregory; daughter Devie Ann Montanano; brother Walter Sonny of Las Vegas; sister Dorothy Loando, and four grandchildren.
