Pacific West honors for UH-Hilo's Forkum

University of Hawaii-Hilo head basketball coach Jim Forkum has been named co-coach of the year in the Pacific West Conference with Alaska Anchorage's Charlie Bruns.

Forkum coached the Vulcans to third place despite retaining only one player, a reserve, from last year's team.

Bruns became the first three-time winner of the award.

WIESE GETS WAC HONOR

University of Hawaii sophomore first baseman Stephanie Wiese was named Western Athletic Conference softball player of the week for Feb. 24-March 2.

Wiese, a native of Ontario, Calif., hit .667 (8-for-12) in four games with three home runs, nine RBI and two doubles as the Rainbow Wahine split four games at San Jose State. She also scored five runs in the games.

AH YAT HONORED

Former Iolani quarterback Brian Ah Yat shares the University of Montana football program's Most Valuable Player award with linebacker Jason Crebo and wide receiver Joe Douglass.

Ah Yat, a sophomore, set Montana single-season passing records with 3,615 yards for 42 touchdowns.

MARGERUM RECORD SPRINT

Joy Margerum set a state 100-meter record for women age 36 with a time of 12.85 seconds last weekend at the USA Track and Field /University of Hawaii Intramural Track Meet at Cooke Field.

Margerum finished 1.23 seconds behind dash winner Kelsey Nakanelua.

Duncan Macdonald ran the 3,000 in 9:14.0, an men's age group record for age 48.

All times at the meet were electronically timed to 1/100th of a second.
