Sutton pulls surfing upset

NORTH NARRABEEN BEACH, Australia - Hawaii's Shawn Sutton, a new member on the World Championship Tour, upset two veterans in round one of the Coca-Cola Surf Classic yesterday.

Sutton advanced to round three by defeating Australia's Richie Lovett and Todd Prestage in difficult 3- to 4-foot waves.

Other Hawaii surfers gaining round three include Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia, Kaipo Jaquias and Conan Hayes.

Back to compete in round two are Derek Ho, Kalani Robb, John Shimooka and Ross Williams.



STARS BEAT WAVES

At Sacramento, Calif., the Hawaii Waves opened their Professional Volleyball League season yesterday with a 13-15, 3-15, 16-14, 15-12 loss to the Sacramento Stars.

"I saw a lot of good things, but there are still a lot of things we need to work on," Waves head coach Mike Normand said.



SEA WARRIORS DOMINATE

The Hawaii Pacific University women's softball team completed a four-game, weekend sweep of Chaminade University yesterday at Cartwright Field.

HPU(17-2) won the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader, 11-4 and 7-0.

Michelle Ringor had four hits and Jennifer Kimura knocked in two runs in the opener for HPU, which is off to its best start in history.

Susie Schoales pitched a three-hitter in the second game.

HPU's 14-game winning streak is two shy of the school record.



GOVERNORS' GOLF BENEFIT

The Governors' Football Booster Club Golf Tourney will be held March 24 with a 12:30 p.m., shotgun start at the Honolulu Country Club.

The fee is $450 per three-person team, $600 Gold Sponsor team. The deadline is March 10.
