Sutton advanced to round three by defeating Australia's Richie Lovett and Todd Prestage in difficult 3- to 4-foot waves.
Other Hawaii surfers gaining round three include Shane Dorian, Sunny Garcia, Kaipo Jaquias and Conan Hayes.
Back to compete in round two are Derek Ho, Kalani Robb, John Shimooka and Ross Williams.
At Sacramento, Calif., the Hawaii Waves opened their Professional Volleyball League season yesterday with a 13-15, 3-15, 16-14, 15-12 loss to the Sacramento Stars. STARS BEAT WAVES
