Hawaii casting for the motion picture "The Moon and Sixpence" is nearly completed with five Oahu residents getting bit parts but more to be selected on Kauai, where the majority of filming will be done in June. Local actors cast in 'Moon'
By Tim Ryan
Star-BulletinThe $10-million Victoria Films production starring Alan Rickman is scheduled to begin filming on Kauai June 9 for about three weeks, with maybe one day of filming on Oahu. Most of the filming is being done in Europe.
The screenplay by Christopher Hampton, who also is director, is based on the W. Somerset Maugham novel inspired by the life of painter Paul Gaugin. So Kauai will be doubling for Tahiti.
The story sets out to uncover the truth about a mysterious painter named Charles Strickland, who has run away to a South Pacific island. It depicts a dull, respectable stockbroker who flees his comfortable, middle-class existence to become an eccentric, rude, sensual artist in search of happiness and perfection.
Hampton, 51, was born in Fayal in the Azores in 1946. He received the 1995 Tony Award for Best Score and Best Book of a Musical for "Sunset Boulevard."
