Enosa named
HIAC Player of the Week

Star-Bulletin staff

Brigham Young University-Hawaii's Ionatana Enosa has been named the Hawaii Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Player of the Week.

Enosa, a 6-foot-10 senior center, scored 25 points and had 11 rebounds in Saturday's 90-80 victory over host University of Hawaii at Hilo. The two-time All-American was ejected with four minutes to go after taking a swing at a Vulcan player and being assessed a technical foul.

It was the second weekly honor for Enosa, who limped through the Seasiders' 19th win of the season with a sore knee. Earlier this month, the native of American Samoa was hampered with bone spurs in his ankle.

MOVING ON UP

Hawaii Pacific University earned three first-place votes and BYU-Hawaii moved up a spot in the latest NAIA poll

The Sea Warriors (23-2) remained No. 2, receiving 475 points. They are ranked behind Life College (27-1) of Georgia, which received the other 17 first-place votes for 485 points.

The Seasiders (20-6) were up a notch from 19th to 18th.

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

HPU's Juergen Malbeck and Brandyn Akana of BYUH remain among the national NAIA leaders in this week's statistics.

Malbeck, a senior center, ranks third in field-goal percentage (.678). Akana, a junior guard, is 12th in free-throw percentage (.858).

As a team, the Sea Warriors are fourth in scoring margin (+20.04), 10th in field-goal percentage (.517) and 12th in scoring (88.72 ppg). The Seasiders rank sixth in field-goal percentage (.526).

PACWEST WRAPPING UP

Chaminade University and Hawaii-Hilo end the Pacific West Conference season against each other Saturday in Hilo.

The Silverswords (8-18 overall, 4-7 PWC) won the first meeting, 70-61, in Honolulu. The Vulcans (9-16, 5-6) hope to have leading scorer and rebounder Merriel Jenkins (back injury) back for this season's final two games, including tonight's game against HPU at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.

Jenkins remains among the NCAA Division II national leaders in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots. In statistics through Feb. 16, the junior forward is third in blocked shots (3.0 blocks per game), 12th in scoring (23.2 points per game) and 16th in rebounding (10.3 rebound per game).

In PacWest statistics, Jenkins leads the conference in rebounding and blocked shots, is third in scoring and seventh in field-goal percentage (.537). The Vulcans' Rodney Odrick is ranked in two categories: second in steals (1.8 steals per game) and seventh in scoring (15.3) while teammate Brian Yule leads in free-throw percentage (.917).

Chaminade's Damian Cephas tops the PacWest in field-goal percentage (.650) and is second in rebounding (8.5 rpg). Darnell Clavon of the Silverswords is fourth in scoring (20.6 ppg), eighth in field-goal percentage (.493) and fourth in steals (1.5 spg).
