Sundberg not ready
for WAC playoffs

By Mike Fitzgerald
Star-Bulletin

Bad news for the big guy.

University of Hawaii team physician Dr. Andrew Nichols said that Seth Sundberg will not play again this season, barring a medical miracle - or Hawaii reaching the Sweet Sixteen of the NCAA tournament.

"I can't imagine it," Nichols said last night of Sundberg returning anytime soon.

Sundberg suffered a lacerated spleen against Air Force on Feb. 8. He didn't require surgery after spending a week in The Queen's Medical Center, but a CAT scan yesterday showed that the spleen is still healing.

He had hoped to return in time for the WAC tournament, which starts next week.

"He is doing fine," Nichols said. "But his spleen has to be completely normal before he can have contact.

"We said six to eight weeks and it has been only 17 days. It would have been incredible healing for it to be normal at this point."

UH head coach Riley Wallace said this week that he wasn't planning on Sundberg being able to play in the WAC tourney.

"As much as Seth wants to play, we have to consider his health first," Wallace said.

VEGAS FIGHT CARD

UNLV head coach Billy Bayno and veteran Billy Tubbs, now at Texas Christian, nearly duked it out during their game last Saturday in Las Vegas.

Bayno said Tubbs was out of line for complaining to the referees after UNLV won at TCU, 96-91, on Jan. 6.

According to the Las Vegas SUN, both coaches were working the referees pretty hard last Saturday when veteran ref Frank Bosone summoned both coaches just before the start of the second half.

Then the near-fistfight began.

"You're not doing this in my gym," Bayno told Tubbs.

"(Bleep) you, mother (bleep)," said Tubbs, who also tugged on Bayno's sport coat.

"I'll kick your (bleeping) ass, you little punk," Bayno said as the two went face-to-face.

"You've got bad breath," Tubbs said.

After another set of expletives, the two were finally split up.

"He did me a favor," Bayno said. "He got my team fired up. I should call him and thank him."

FULL HOUSE

The 10,225-seat Special Events Arena officially sold out yesterday for tomorrow night's UH-Fresno State showdown.

It is the first sellout since March 4, 1995, a 58-46 UH victory over Wyoming.

The four other UH men's basketball sellouts at the Special Events Arena were: Dec. 22, 1994 against North Carolina (88-76 loss); Dec. 27, 1994, against Boston University (77-63 win); Dec. 29, 1994, against Iowa (84-82 loss) and Dec. 30, 1994, against Cincinnati (75-66 win).

RPI RATING

Hawaii stayed at No. 36 this week out of 305 Division I teams in the Rating Percentage Index (RPI), which is used by the NCAA in the selection of at-large teams and the seeding of all teams for the NCAA tournament.

Fresno State is at No. 60.

WAC PLAYERS

UH forward Micah Kroeger was one of the nominees for the WAC's Pacific Division Player of the Week award, which went to UNLV's Warren Rosegreen.

Rosegreen led the Rebels to three wins last week against Fresno State, Air Force and TCU. He averaged a double-double (15.7 rebounds and 11.7 points) per game.

Tulsa's Shea Seals won the Mountain Division award, averaging 22.5 points and six rebounds in a victory over Brigham Young and a two-point loss to No. 5 Utah.

DOUBTING THOMAS

One of the big rumors in Albuquerque last weekend had sophomore center Kenny Thomas leaving the Lobos after this season to turn pro - and head coach Dave Bliss subsequently leaving New Mexico to take the vacant LSU job.

Not true, New Mexico sports information director Greg Remington said yesterday.

"Thomas said he is definitely coming back," Remington said. "And Bliss has no comment whatsoever on any coaching jobs."

Still, a source at the Albuquerque Journal insists that the scenario is a strong possibility.

CARTER STATS

Anthony Carter is tied for 14th in the nation in assists at 6.5 per game.

Carter is second in the WAC in that category, just behind Fresno State's Dominick Young at 6.6.
