Edge displays winning
ways in Pro-Am

Mitzi Edge beat Tracy Kerdyk in a two-hole playoff to win the LPGA Super Pro-Am and $20,000 top prize yesterday at the Hawaii Prince Golf Club . Both finished with 36-hole scores of 145.

Edge shot a 1-over-par 73 yesterday. Kerdyk posted a 71 to force the playoff.

Hawaii's Pam Kometani had the day's best round -- a 2-under 70 -- in windy conditions to take third place at 146 for $4,000.

Melissa McNamara aced the 127-yard fourth hole on the B Course, using a 7-iron, to win a round trip for two to Tokyo on Japan Airlines. Her pro-am team took top honors with a 19-under-par 53.

Thirty-six LPGA pros took part in the two-day event sponsored by the Prince Hotels.



WAHINE DROP TWO

At San Jose, Calif., Jill Tawney drove in two runs with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning as the San Jose State softball team rallied to defeat No. 22 Hawaii, 5-4, in the second game of a Western Athletic Conference season-opening doubleheader yesterday.

Tawney also was instrumental in the Spartans' 8-3 victory in the first game. The designated hitter hit a three-run double to left in the bottom of the third inning to break a 1-1 tie.

San Jose State improved to 10-5 overall. The Wahine fell to 11-9-1.



UH SHUTTLE BUSES

The University of Hawaii will provide shuttle-bus service tomorrow and Saturday for fans attending games at the Special Events Arena.

Two shuttle buses will follow a route starting at Krauss Hall traveling via Correa Road and East West Road to the Bio-Medical Building and back to Krauss Hall.

Krauss Hall is located across from the parking structure leading to the Special Events Arena.

Temporary shuttle stops will be set up along the route. Also, fans waving down the shuttle will be picked up. There is no charge.

The buses run from 6 to 11 p.m.



WAVES OPEN SEASON

The Hawaii Waves women's professional volleyball team opens its inaugural season on the road this Saturday at Sacramento,Calif.

The Waves, the preseason favorites to win the Professional Volleyball League title, are led by former University of Hawaii-Hilo All-American Tanya Fuamatu and UH Wahine basketball/volleyball player Nani Flores.

The Sacramento Stars are 1-1.

Hawaii begins its home schedule with two matches against the San Bernardino Jazz. The March 7 match is at 6 p.m. at the Iolani School gym. The match on March 8 is at 1 p.m. at UH's Klum Gym.

Admission is $5 except for the March 7 match which is free.

The Waves' schedule:

March: 1: at Sacramento Stars. 7: San Bernardino Jazz, 6 p.m., Iolani. 8: San Bernardino, 1 p.m., Klum. 15: at Sacramento. 16: at San Jose Storm. 27: Utah Predators, 7 p.m., Klum. 28: San Jose, 7 p.m., Klum. 29: San Jose, TBA, Hilo.

April: 5: Sacramento, 1 p.m., Klum. 12: at Utah. 18-19: League playoffs, Salt Lake City.

Persons 18 and over who want to be a cheerleader or dancer in the Pacific Semi-Pro Basketball League this summer, should call the PBL office at 841-8050 by Saturday.
