
Chun Kwong Lau, 95, taught Chinese to former U.S. Sen. Hiram Fong and retired Hawaii Chief Justice William S. Richardson.Lau died Feb. 18 at the age of 95.
Lau, an Iolani School and University of Hawaii at Manoa graduate, arrived in Hawaii in 1922. Four years later he opened the Chung Wah Chinese School in Kaimuki. The school remained open until 1941 when the military closed all foreign language schools.
The following year Lau opened a restaurant which lasted through World War II and the postwar period. He later opened a real estate business called Lau and Lau Properties Inc.
Lau is survived by wife Pui Lan Chang; half brother Hing Bun; sons Merton and Dr. Timothy; daughter Dr. LaVay; adopted son Lester; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will begin at 9:45 a.m. Sunday at Diamond Head Mortuary. Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. The burial will follow at Diamond Head Memorial Park. Casual attire. No flowers.
