Maryland firm buys
local claims manager

A Maryland company that specializes in lowering medical costs for insurers and employers has purchased Integrated Health Management Inc., a leading local provider of medical claims management services.

ADP Integrated Medical Solutions Inc. said its purchase of Integrated Health Management, which listed $2 million in revenues in 1996, expands its presence in the medical claims management field to all 50 states. The sale price was not disclosed.

Gary Twigg, executive vice president and general manager of ADP IMS, said that his company plans to retain all of Integrated Health's 10 employees. He said he hopes to expand the local work force as the company's business grows.

Kris Kadzielawa, Integrated Health's co-founder and president, will serve as the director of Hawaii operations. "We know this relationship will be a great match for both companies, our employees and our clients," said Kadzielawa.

ADP IMS is a unit of Roseland, N.J.-based ADP Inc., a $3.5 billion information technology firm. ADP IMS specializes in medical cost containment services for auto insurance.

Twigg said his company is expanding into the workers compensation field with its purchase of Integrated Health.

Integrated Health offers cost containment services for many of Hawaii's workers' compensation insurers and auto insurers as well as several large employers such as the City and County of Honolulu and the County of Hawaii. Its main subsidiaries include Medical Billing Review Services Inc. and Apple Health Systems Inc.

Pineapple unions
settle with companies

Members of two pineapple industry unions have reached agreement with three local companies following six weeks of bargaining.

The Pineapple Companies of Hawaii and International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union yesterday agreed on a three-year labor contract, which will cover about 2,000 employees on Oahu and Maui. The Pineapple Companies of Hawaii are Del Monte Fresh Produce (Hawaii) Inc., Dole Fresh Fruit Co. and Maui Pineapple Co.

The contract affects 1,000 workers at Maui Pineapple, 500 at Dole and 500 at Del Monte.

A union statement said details of the deal will be released after a ratification vote, set for March 18-19 on Oahu and March 20-21 on Maui.

Leeward golf course
being sold by Gentry

The former Ewa by Gentry golf course site in Leeward Oahu is being sold to a group of U.S. and Taiwanese investors.

Kyong-su Im, attorney for the partnership, Coral Creek Golf Course Inc., said the deal, valued at up to $15 million, is expected to close by the end of March. Im said the group hopes to complete construction of the 190-acre golf course in about 18 months. Coral Creek also will be the name of the new course.

The Gentry Investment Properties site is part of the 1,000-acre master planned community of Ewa by Gentry.

Besides the golf course, plans call for 8,000 single-family homes and townhouses and a small commercial development. About 4,000 homes and a school already have been built.

American Hawaii parent
reports earnings jump

American Classic Voyages Co., parent company of American Hawaii Cruises and Delta Steamboat Co., today reported an eleven-fold increase in its fourth-quarter profit.

The Chicago-based company said it earned $22.4 million, or $1.62 a share, for the fourth quarter of 1996, compared with $197,000, or a 1 cent a share, for the same period in 1995.

The cruise-ship company said the huge difference was due to the sale of a New Orleans hotel, the Maison Dupuy, for a gain of $11.7 million in the latest quarter. Even without that one-time gain, however, the company said it had its best fourth-quarter result.

Excluding the gain and a tax adjustment, the profit was $2.1 million for the 1996 quarter, equal to 15 cents a share. Revenues of $50.2 million in the latest quarter were up 4.8 percent from $47.9 million in the last quarter of 1995. American Hawaii Cruises run the SS Independent interisland cruises.
