Top-seeded Iolani advances
to state soccer semifinals

The top-seeded Iolani Raiders won easily and No. 4 Waiakea needed double overtime to win its quarterfinal-round match in the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts/Hawaii High School Athletic Association boys' soccer tournament at Aloha Stadium yesterday.

However, the second and third seeds, Mililani and St. Anthony, respectively, were knocked out of the winners' bracket.

In today's semifinal-round matchups, Iolani plays Waiakea at 5:30 p.m. and Castle takes on Punahou at 7:30 p.m.

Iolani 4, Kahuku 1: The Raiders (8-0-2) led 2-1 at the half on goals by Reid Nakamura and Micah Sadoyama, then put the match away on second-half goals by Derek Tanga, Tony Rania.

Brandon Villamor scored for the Red Raiders (10-4-1).

Waiakea 1, Kalaheo 0: Zach Sharrett converted a cross into the winning goal six minutes, 11 seconds into the second overtime period to lift the No. 4-seeded Warriors (10-1-1).

The Mustangs (10-3) outshot Waiakea, 25-11, but couldn't dent the net.

Castle 1, Mililani 0: The No. 2-seeded Trojans couldn't buy a goal and lost their first match of the season (11-1-1).

The Knights (11-2-2) advance to the semifinal round when Kiha Scholtz took a 35-yard direct free kick and lofted the ball off the tips of the goalkeeper's hands, under the cross bar and into the net 23 minutes into the game.

Punahou 3, St. Anthony 0: The Buffanblu (8-1-2) took and 1-0 halftime lead on Brad Pile's goal, then received second-half scores from Tioni Hackney and Ken Goto.

Hawaii Prep 2, Kaiser 1: In a consolation match, John Buscher scored the game winner 19 minutes into the second half for Hawaii Prep (10-3-2).
