Smart, artistic and athletic

Noelani Rickard says her idea of a dream house is one that is solar-powered.

"I'd want something environmentally designed," she said.

Rickard, an eighth-

grader at Lahaina Intermediate School, mixes her love of sketching with science and mathematics.

Last year, she developed a science fair project that measured the time it took for foods, such as rice and bread, to develop molds under different conditions.

The experiment, including her display, was such a success that her science teacher expanded it into a class project.

"I felt good because I got to share it with the whole class," Noelani said.

Teachers say she has a creative mind, and she helps others.

Rickard worked as a writer and photographer for the school yearbook last year. This year, she's the staff editor in charge of supervising other students.

"She's very responsible," said Jo-Anne Kauhaahaa, the yearbook teacher.

"She even keeps on top of me."

Rickard has a 3.7 grade-point average and is studying algebra in her honors class.

She also dances hula professionally, plays in a softball league, and is a member of the Napili Canoe Club.

The daughter of Milton and Marianne Rickard attributes her success to her parents, who encourage her and help with homework.
