Grants and donations
The People's Fund has awarded $2,000 of its fall grants to the Aloha 'Aina Life and Education Center, Aloha 'Aina Student Environmental Action Coalition, Hana Ia Lima a Kau-KNAC Sovereign Hawaiian Radio, Keauea Foundation, Protect Kohanaiki 'Ohana, and Revolution Books. Smaller emergency grants also were made to Life of the Land, KNAC radio, Kanaka Maoli Tribunal Komike and Malu 'Aina Peace and Education Center.
The People's Fund raises money from hundreds of local individuals concerned about justice in Hawaii and the Pacific, and distributes grants twice each year. The deadline to apply for the spring 1997 cycle is March 1. For more information, call 526-2441.
Yoshikazu Nakamura, president of the Bank of the Ryukus, Ltd. in Okinawa and an East-West Center alumnus, has donated $50,000 to the center as part of a commemoration of the first anniversary of the mutual assistance exchange agreement with the Bank of Hawaii.
The Someone Special Foundation has received grants of $20,000 from the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. and $2,000 from the Jessie Ann Chalmers Trust. The grants are earmarked to bring the Someone Special program, a health and safety education program for children ages 3 to 5, to over 225 schools throughout the state.
