Treasure to be found
at Waimanalo benefit

Waimanalo Trash and Treasures '97 is a combination garage sale/swap meet with Hawaiian arts and crafts and snacks thrown in.

The event, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, is a fund-raiser by the Waimanalo Health Center's Nalo Teen Force. Force members also will be collecting canned goods for the center's emergency food pantry, which helps more than 700 needy people in the area.

The center is at 41-1347 Kalanianaole Highway. Parking is available across the street at Waimanalo Elementary and Intermediate. Information: 259-7948.

Academy of Pacific
fund raiser

Willie K. and Kanilau will jazz up the Academy of the Pacific's luau, country store and auction Saturday.

Admission is free for the store and auction, which open at 3 p.m. Tickets for the entertainment and luau, which start 4 p.m., are $25 at the door.

The school is at 913 Alewa Drive. Parking with free shuttle service to and from the campus will be available at the Community Church of Honolulu, 2345 Nuuanu Ave., and at Maemae Elementary, 319 Wyllie St.

'Year of Ox' tales

Storyteller Barbara Wong stirs up a potion of traditional Chinese tales at a celebration of the "Year of the Ox" at 7:30 p.m. today at the Honolulu Academy of Arts.

Cultural historian Douglas Chong will add to the mixture, recounting with humor how the ancient celebration has evolved during the years.

Traditional Chinese folk dancing and lion dances will also spice up the evening.
