Sakamoto-Hoe scholarship
is established

Former University of Hawaii swimming standout Ivanelle Hoe has established the Sakamoto-Hoe Scholarship Endowment Fund in honor of her former coach, Soichi Sakamoto, and to assist UH students in the swimming and diving programs.

The fund will provide scholarships for full-time undergraduate or graduate students at UH who are present or past members of the varsity swimming or diving teams.

Recipients must be Hawaii born, a graduate of a Hawaii high school and/or show proof of Hawaii residency. They also must meet NCAA academic eligibility requirements and have some degree of financial need.

Sakamoto coached UH from 1946 to 1961 and is a member of the Swimming International Hall of Fame.

Hoe was a UH swim team member under Sakamoto. She set a world record in the 100-meter butterfly in 1955 and won the 200-meter breaststroke event in the 1957 U.S. Women's Indoor National Championships.

Hoe and Sakamoto are inductees of the UH Sports Circle of Honor.
