How’s the traffic?
Check the Net

Seven of the 60 city cameras mounted on our often congested roads are also on the Internet.

A quick drive over to http://www.eng.hawaii.edu/~csp/Trafficam/index.html will provide you with a series of live pictures from cameras pointed along the H-1 freeway.

So if you want to check to see if it's safe to actually drive to the airport at lunch, the Internet can help you out.

Or if you're in Slippery Rock, Texas, wishing for the urban congestion of Honolulu, you can visit without denting a fender.

The Web page was developed by Constantinos S. Papacostas, a University of Hawaii professor of civil engineering, who said he's "looking forward to expanding the camera sites included on the Web" and providing additional information such as traffic speeds.

The video cameras are hooked up to a fiber-optic backbone installed from Aina Koa to Middle Street, according to the city.

Within the next year, they hope to expand the camera system by going west from Middle Street.

Also, there are plans for cameras on the town side of the Likelike and Pali highways, with future plans to capture Waipahu and Ewa.
