John Brogan, Evelyn Foo

Some run with
no aloha for sleepers

THE Great Aloha Run is over and residents who live in the vicinity of Aloha Tower are now breathing a collective sigh of relief. They won't have to listen to shouting servicemen in the wee hours of the morning until next year, unless some stumble out of Restaurant Row or the Aloha Tower Marketplace and start a beef. But the chanting Marines and Army men who run in tandem each year feel the necessity to announce their presence at the top of their lungs. Not good practice, one would assume, should they find themselves in a combat situation. But the cannon has sounded, the streets are clear again and the downtown residents can sleep in - except for one thing: Yesterday was a holiday for some, the rare day in which they could have stayed in bed ...

FUNNY interview on KHON-TV yesterday. Reporter Manolo Morales was talking to people participating in the run - really a walk for most entrants - and asked three young men where they went to school. "Pearl City," one replied. "What year?" asked Morales. "Whatta ya mean, what year?" the kid responded. "What year in school?" "Oh, junior," came the reply. Must have made their teachers proud ... Then there was Ned Jarrett, former race driver and registered "Good Ol' Boy," doing color commentary during the Daytona 500 race Sunday. He described the car of driver Robert Presley, which spun out, pirouetted in the air and landed on the tires as making "one of them turns like them ice skaters do." No staid talking heads at CBS ... SPEAKING of cars, we have the Ford Motor Co. to thank for sponsoring next Sunday's TV premiere of "Shindler's List" without commercial interruption ... And how about a stick-to-it-iveness award for John Brogan. He began his career with Sheraton 37 years ago as rooms manager in Hawaii and now has been named Senior V.P. North America Division, President, Sheraton Hotels in Hawaii ...

Forever Young

IT was supposed to be an early Chinese New Year's celebration arranged by Evelyn Foo's grandchildren, Bryan, Deryck and Marisa. Instead Grandma Foo discovered it was a surprise 90th birthday party with some 100 guests in attendance, including former senator and Mrs. Hiram Fong, old friends. After the sumptuous Chinese dinner, the new nonagenarian had a ball on the dance floor with her old friend since teenhood, renowned artist (and former dance partner) John Young ... THEN there's "Forever Plaid," the musical story of four guys who knew each other since high school 40 years ago when they formed a quartet singing tunes of their musical idols of the late '50s and early '60s - the Four Aces, Four Lads, Four Freshmen, Hi-Los and Crew Cuts, plus Johnny Ray, Harry Belafonte and others. This musical hi-jinx, currently at the Hula Hut on Beach Walk, takes place after the four are killed in a bus crash, but are given the opportunity to return and perform the show they never got to do in life. It's an ingenious romp and very funny, starring Robert Larson, James Pestana, Andrew Sakaguchi and John Wong. Music director Emmett Yoshioka also engages in some of the shtik. The show is equally enjoyable for those who remember the original groups or for those too young to have heard many of the songs, as my companion for the evening and I can attest ...

TENOR Stanley Jackson, who sang in the opera "L'Italiana In Algeri" at the Blaisdell Concert Hall, has won the grand prize in the Max Kade Foundation's annual Liederkranz competition in N.Y. (No, it has nothing to do with cheese!) He's been invited to participate in a concert April 12 at Avery Fischer Hall in Manhattan ...

New Deli growing

THINGS have been going so well at the new Bernard's N.Y. Deli location in Ward Centre that owner Bernard Horowitz is already expanding. He'll be adding 60 seats and expanding the kitchen and take out area as well. And Bernard proudly boasts his is the exclusive locale to get Brooklyn Beer in five varieties. None of the new projects will affect the current operation of business .
