The Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau has retained a Japanese company as its meetings and conventions sales representative in Japan.

The HVCB said International Communications Specialists Inc., part of Japan Travel Bureau Inc., is the largest Japanese planner and operator of conventions.

Under a contract signed while HVCB officials were in Japan earlier this month, ICS will set up and run a Japan sales representative office to create business for the Hawaii Convention Center. The HVCB is responsible for long-term marketing of the convention center, which is set to open in July 1998.

Evergreen expands radio operations

NEW YORK - Evergreen Media Corp. agreed to buy Chancellor Broadcasting Co. and Viacom Inc.'s radio stations for a combined $2.58 billion in stock, cash and debt, to become the nation's largest independent radio broadcaster.

Evergreen said it will pay about $1.5 billion for Chancellor and its 51 stations, and $1.075 billion cash for Viacom's 10 stations. The Viacom price is on the steep side, analysts said.

The combined company, to be called Chancellor Media Corp., will own about 103 stations in 21 major markets, including New York, Los Angeles and Atlanta. With estimated revenue of $810 million, it's almost double rival Jacor Communications Inc.
