Hawaiian treasures

The Bishop Museum today begins a series of 10 discussions by experts in Hawaiian culture.

The free programs are being presented in conjunction with the museum's new "Na Mea Makamae: Treasures of Hawai'i" exhibit. They will be conducted on Mondays at 7 p.m. through April 21 and include admission to the exhibit.

Today, "Our Treasured Hawaiian Language." Hokulani Holt-Padilla, author, kumu hula, community worker and language teacher demonstrates the beauty and majesty of the Hawaiian language through hula and chant.

Feb. 24, "The Maui Epic." Storyteller Emili Wolfgramm, Polynesian studies researcher and teacher, recounts the story of Polynesian hero, Maui.

March 3, "When Myth Becomes History." Rubellite Kawena Johnson, author, former University of Hawaii lecturer and cultural consultant, gives an overview of the Kumulipo, the Hawaiian creation chant.

March 10, "Tales of Beloved Treasures." John Keolamaka'ainana Lake, chanter, storyteller, kumu hula and leader of a cultural school and halau, shares stories and chants about some of the special people and treasures highlighted in the exhibit.

March 17, "A Vessel of Cultural Pride." Master canoe builder Wright Bowman Jr. and navigator David Lyman talk about the construction and voyages of the Hawai'iloa and Hokule'a. Builders and crew members give a tour of the Hawai'iloa, which is part of the exhibit.

March 24, "Liloa and Kamehameha." Fred Kalani Meinecke, author, translator, researcher and head of the Windward Community College Hawaiian Studies Department, explores the life of Liloa, who ruled the island of Hawaii in the 15th century. He also shares facets of the life of Kamehameha the Great.

March 31, "O Hawaii." Award-winning producer Tom Coffman introduces his film "O Hawai'i: Hawai'i from Settlement to Kingdom," showcasing the epic rise of the Native Hawaiian settlement, its early contact with the West and the formation of the Hawaiian kingdom.

April 7, "Secret of Stones." Museum staff members Toni Han, Dr. Kevin Johnson and Dr. Deborah Olszewski tell how Polynesians made tools from stones, the origins of the stones, their archaeological significance and the different tools that can be identified by their style differences.

April 14, "Hawaiian Music of the 1940s." Steve Fredrick of Maui shares film clips from his private collection, showing Hawaiian entertainers in the 1940s. Archivist and author DeSoto Brown will present moving images from the museum's collection.

April 21, "Legacy of the Ali'i." Office of Hawaiian Affairs culture specialist and kumu hula Manu Boyd examines the 19th century royalty of Hawaii and their foresight to preserve cultures for the future generations.

Prom-enade

Manoa Valley Theatre's annual fund-raising event, "Forever Prom: The Best of Island Proms," takes place Friday at the Hawaiian Regent Hotel.

Singer Matthew Peterson and a five-piece band will perform music of the 1950s and '60s and dance lessons for the Stroll and Hand Jive will be offered.

Ray Bumatai will host the show. Twenty actors portraying various characters from MVT productions will wander among guests who will be invited to participate in "Name that Tune" or hula hooping and the prom king and queen contests.

A silent auction will feature one-of-a-kind items such as a weekend for two at the Hapuna Prince Hotel, Hilton Waikoloa, a private home on Molokai and the Sheraton Waikiki.

Tickets are $125 per person or $1,250 and $1,500 for tables of 10. Information and reservations: 988-6131.

One to collect

The Hawaii Collectors Expo '97, with more than 200 booths selling gotta-have collectibles, occurs 4 to 9 p.m. Feb. 21, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.
