William McKinley Klein Jr. had a passion for plants and gardens. A fervent collector, prolific writer and avid preservationist, he was able to help others see the value of plants and related research. As executive director of the National Tropical Botanical Garden, which has four gardens in Hawaii and one in Florida, Klein pushed hard to restore and expand the facilities, their collections of rare tropical and native plants, and their scientific research.
Klein, 63, died yesterday of heart failure while attending a series of meetings and a celebration at the Kampong, the Florida garden. Friends say he felt faint while taking his morning walk and was taken to the hospital, where he died at 1:30 p.m.
Lucinda Fleeson, development director for the National Tropical Botanical Garden, said Klein was skilled at attracting donors and sparking enthusiasm among his staff. His high energy often left his staff and friends breathless, she said, as he was known to begin work at 4:30 a.m. and had started classes to learn Hawaiian.
Klein moved to Kauai in 1994 to
become director of the gardens. He set about reopening the Allerton and Lawai gardens, which had been devastated two years earlier by Hurricane Iniki, added a third garden in Limahuli on the islands north shore, and reopened the Kahanu Garden on Maui.
Before that, he led restoration at Fairchild Tropical Garden in Miami, where nearly 70 percent of the collections were damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Earlier, he helped transform the Morris Arborteum in Philadelphia into a showcase after raising more than $10 million for extensive renovation and expansion. His career began as a botany instructor at the Colorado State University.
He is survived by wife Janet; son Darien, of Atlanta; daughters Jennifer Morrison of Massachusetts, and Melissa and Erica, both of Philadelphia; mother Winifred Klein of Colorado; and two sisters.
A memorial service is planned. The family requests contributions to the National Tropical Botanical Garden, P.O. Box 340, Lawai, Hawaii 96765 or the Morris Arboretum, 100 Northwestern Ave., Philadelphia, Pa. 19118.
