to OIA playoff victory
Star-BulletinKaiser High rallied behind Stephen Giles' 22 points to defeat Nanakuli, 53-50, in one of four opening-round games of the Oahu Interscholastic Association basketball playoffs last night. Giles, the OIA East's second-leading scorer, had the home-court advantage and he made full use of it.
"This is his house and he wasn't going to let us walk in here," said Nanakuli head coach Joshua DeFreitas.
Giles scored 13 points in the first half to keep the Cougars within three points of Nanakuli's lead (29-26).
"In the first half, they gave me jumpers, so I was taking jumpers," he said.
The 6-foot-3 senior added five points in the third quarter as Kaiser caught and went ahead of Nanakuli, 38-34. But the Golden Hawks fought back and Byron Marfil hit a short jumper at the buzzer to tie it at 38.
Nanakuli went up 42-38 and 44-40 in the fourth quarter. But Pierre Elliot sank a 3-pointer to narrow it to 44-43 and Travis Sutton scored on a hook to give the lead back to Kaiser, 45-44.
Eldridge Kahoano restored Nanakuli's lead for the last time before Brett Kakuda gave Kaiser a 47-46 edge.
Giles then stole the ball in the backcourt and Neal O'Heron scored two in a row to seal the win.
Byron (14) and Kalama Marfil (13) led the Golden Hawks.
"In the first half, they were penetrating the zone and just eating us up," said Kaiser head coach Bryan Almadova. "Basically, they outhustled us the whole first half."
Kaiser's Grant Sato held Edmanuel DeFreitas, the island's top 3-point shooter and two-time OIA West scoring champ, to 11 points. He had only one trey.
"The way we planned it, wherever DeFreitas went, we went with him - to the bathroom or the concession stand," said Almadova.
