Licensing operations
undergo changes

When the city's main driver licensing office moves from Maunakea Street to Kapalama next month, it will no longer handle licenses for motorcyclists and commercial drivers.

Right now, motorcycle and commercial vehicle licenses are processed only at the main office. After the move, motorcyclists will be served at all driver licensing substations, but the skill test will still be administered at the city's safety inspection site at 1112 Kapahulu Ave.

Commercial driver licensing is being relocated to 99-501 Salt Lake Blvd., across from Aloha Stadium, at the same site where commercial road tests are currently administered. No date for the move has been announced, and until the new office is open, the Maunakea office will continue processing motorcycle and commercial driver licenses.

3 isles exempt
from new food stamp rules

Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island will be exempted when new federal food stamp restrictions go into effect later this month, state Human Services Director Susan Chandler said.

The state requested the exemptions for the three islands because of their high unemployment rates.

As of Feb. 22, single able-bodied adults between the ages of 18 and 50 who have no dependents won't be eligible for food stamps unless they work 20 hours a week or are in approved job training programs.

One dead, one injured
in Maui auto accident

WAILUKU - Maui had its first traffic fatality of the year yesterday morning when a car struck a monkeypod tree near the entrance of the Sandalwood Golf Course.

Santos I. Corpuz, 46, of Wailuku died after the car he was driving crossed the center line on Honoapiilani Highway as he headed toward Wailuku and struck the tree about 7 a.m. yesterday, police said.

The passenger, 39-year-old Romeo Cabating of Wailuku, was listed in serious condition this morning at Maui Memorial Hospital. He was listed previously in critical condition.

Both men in the 1994 four-door sedan were wearing seat belts, and air bags did deploy, police said. It was undetermined whether alcohol and speed were involved.

There were six Maui fatalities for the same period last year.

Would-be pilferer
foils his own getaway try

A thief foiled his own getaway yesterday by locking himself out of his pickup truck.

The 38-year-old suspect from Waimanalo, who has 36 prior arrests, was taken into custody at Ala Moana Center by an off-duty police officer about 5 p.m. and booked for second-degree theft.

Police recovered four handbags worth $1,000 that were stolen from the Fendi shop.

A salesclerk grabbed the suspect's shirt to prevent him from leaving the store, but the man broke free. He managed to sprint to his pickup truck only to find that his keys were locked inside.

Ex-boyfriend
charged with sexual assault

Charges of first-degree terroristic threatening, kidnapping and third-degree sexual assault are pending against a 46-year-old man who allegedly committed the offenses yesterday against his former girlfriend.

The woman, 46, told police that the suspect, who had recently lost his apartment, had moved in with her at a Pua Lane address. Sometime between 3:30 and 8 a.m., the man allegedly threatened her verbally after she refused his demands for sex. The woman's son called police after the suspect allegedly pushed her onto a bed.
