Collegiate golf season opens

The local college men's golf season begins with two Big Island tournaments next week.

The third annual Mauna Kea Resort Collegiate Invitational will be held Feb. 10-11 at the Hapuna Course.

The seventh annual Taylor Made Big Island Intercollegiate is set for Feb. 13-15 at the Waikoloa Kings' Course.

Defending NCAA Division I champion Arizona State is competing in both tournaments.

Also entered in the Mauna Kea Resort Collegiate Invitational are Arizona, Arkansas, Hawaii, Hawaii-Hilo, Nagoya University Nevada, Japan's Nihon University, Oregon, Pepperdine, U. of San Francisco, Texas-El Paso, UCLA and UC Santa Barbara.

Joining the Mauna Kea field for the Taylor Made event will be Fresno State, Nevada-Las Vegas, Oregon State, Southern Cal, Southern Methodist, Texas A&M and Texas Christian.

Many of the teams also will play in the John A. Burns Collegiate tournament, Feb. 19-21, at the Kaneohe Klipper Course.



BYU'S KEALALUHI CHARGED

At Provo, Utah, K.O. Kealaluhi, who caught the winning touchdown pass in Brigham Young's Cotton Bowl victory over Kansas State, has been charged with assaulting an opponent in a city-league basketball game.

Kealaluhi, 24, was charged Tuesday with a Class A misdemeanor for allegedly head-butting and punching 33-year-old Greg Hampton during a game Jan. 27 at Dixon Middle School.

Hampton, a Salt Lake City resident, sustained lacerations to the bridge of his nose and lower lip, according to a police report.



STATE SOFTBALL SEEDS

Mililani, winner of the Oahu Interscholastic Association title, is the No. 1 seed in the Hawaii High School Athletic Association girls' softball tournament, Feb. 12-15 at the Roosevelt Stadium.

Sacred Hearts Academy, the Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion, is seeded second. Maui Interscholastic League winner Lahainaluna is No. 3 and Hilo, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation champion, No. 4.



STRAUB WOMEN'S RUN

The 20th anniversary of the Straub Hawaii Women's 10K run/walk will be celebrated March 2 when the state's only all-female run is held at 7 a.m. at Kapiolani Park.

The entry fee is $20 by Feb. 21. Entries postmarked after Feb. 21 are $25; race morning entries are $30. Group rates are available.

SURFING WINNERS

Brazil's Mariana Gogueira won the Express World championships of Women's Bodyboarding at Banzai Pipeline Tuesday.

Mike Stewart of Haleiwa finished first in the Pipeline Bodysurfing Classic the same day.
