Chocoholic's delight

February is Chocolate Month at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The hotel will be hosting Alice Medrich, author and founder of California's Cocolat bakeries. She will demonstrate "Fabulous Chocolate Desserts" 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 22, at The Bali-by-the-Sea restaurant, at a cost of $17 per person. Call 947-7877.

The Bali will also be the setting of the Hawaiian Humane Society "Fantasies in Chocolate" fund-raiser with unlimited chocolate sampling from noon to 3 p.m. There will be a demonstration by Medrich for those who purchase Special Benefactor tickets at $55. A Valentine's Day tradition: Richard Field of R. Field Wine Company discusses the origins of Valentine's Day and special foods to make the celebration more meaningful on his "In Good Taste" radio show, 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, KHVH. A tasting follows from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at R. Field Wine Company in Ward Centre. Sample dessert wines from Bonny Doon Vineyard, Hawaiian Vintage Chocolates and caviar; free. Call 596-WINE (9463).

"Le Jeune Chef" (The Young Chef): Cooking series continues Saturday, with 3660 on the Rise sous chef John Tagupa presenting a cooking demonstration with tasting portions 9:30 to 11:45 a.m. Saturday at Lyon Arboretum. The cost is $22 general, $7.50 students. Call 988-7378. A Farrington High School alumnus, Tagupa will graduate from Kapiolani Community College this year. "Le Jeune Chef" gives the public an opportunity to meet Hawaii's top, upcoming chefs. The series continues Feb. 15 with Hilton Hawaiian Village pastry chef Sam Gaoiran.

Visit the Grammys: Ten VIP trips to the 39th Grammy Awards ceremony Feb. 26 in New York's Madison Square Garden will be awarded by Sheraton Hotels & Resorts. Pick up entry forms at the Minute Chef food court at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani. Other prizes include CDs, audio equipment and free diet cokes.

Contests

Make big dough: Isle dough girls and dough boys ages 9 to 13 can enter the Pillsbury Kids Bake-Off Contest. The grand prize winner earns a $500 Savings Bond, Foodland and Hawaiian Island Creations gift certificates and a Pillsbury goodie bag. The winner's school receives Maika'i Club points worth a computer. Also, each entrant gets a coupon for free Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.

To enter, youngsters must fill out and submit entry forms at a Foodland or Sack N Save store by Feb. 18. The respective stores choose finalists in random drawings. Finalists advance to the Bake-Off finals March 15 at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani Hotel. Information: 732-0791.

Win a trip to France: Trade your eggs benedict recipe for a French cooking and wine sampling trip for two to Provence, Burgundy and Paris. The 12-day trip is the first place prize in the annual Bays English Muffins' 1997 National Recipe Contest, "Build a Better Benedict."

Recipes should use one or more Bays English Muffins. Recipes will be judged on taste, appearance, imagination, practicality, appropriateness for an English muffin and the Benedict theme.

Six finalists will be notified by mail after May 16, and flown to Chicago on June 5 for final recipe preparation and judging June 6.
