Special parking permits
will be monitored closely

On the Martin Luther King holiday, parking on Magic Island was blocked off from 3 a.m. to 3 p.m., we assume to accommodate people marching in the parade. When we got there at noon, many of those spaces were vacant, yet many picnickers had to go around and around trying to find some other space. Someone should have monitored the situation to open up the spaces as they became available. Who was responsible for this?

The city Parks and Recreation Department allowed organizers of the Martin Luther King Coalition to reserve the first five rows of parking at Magic Island, but only from 6 a.m. to noon, said spokeswoman Patti Nagao.

The requirement was that blinker barricades and signs had to be placed at both ends of each row. "To our knowledge, this was done," Nagao said. The barricades were supposed to be removed at noon and the parking opened up to the general public. However, this "apparently was not done," she said.

The signs also were supposed to say that after noon, the spaces would be open to the public.

The problem has been noted, Nagao said, and maintenance crews will be alerted to be make sure such signs are removed.

"We'll just have to monitor" groups with special parking permits "a lot more closely" to make sure they adhere to the terms of the permit, Nagao said.
