Vehicle theft way up
in two Oahu areas

Jonathan Kim's maroon 1990 Toyota Camry was stolen from a parking lot in Waipio Gentry between midnight and 12:30 a.m. Sunday.

A blue Camry with a broken door lock was parked in the next stall. Kim learned later that it was a stolen car.

"I was parked near two new cars, a Ford Mustang and Dodge Avenger, which were much nicer, but they were after mine," said Kim, whose car hasn't been recovered.

Police also haven't recovered Rosanna Namoca's 1988 Camry, which was stolen Jan. 13 from a street near her residence.

Both thefts occurred in two Waipahu-area police beats that ranked first and second in 1995 for auto thefts, according to Crime Trend Series statistics released yesterday by the state attorney general's Crime Prevention and Justice Assistance Division.

Paul Perrone, the division's chief of research and statistics, said 328 vehicles were reported stolen from the beat area that includes Waipio, Crestview, Seaview and east Waipahu.

The total includes 208 cars, 101 trucks and 19 motorcycles.

In the beat area that covers Village Park and west Waipahu, there were 132 cars, 95 trucks and six motorcycles reported stolen in 1995.

Toyotas were the first choice of thieves in both areas. Hondas were second.

Statewide, Hondas followed by Toyotas were the vehicles stolen the most in 1995.

"Because both are popular, there's always a demand for parts," said Detective Leroy Fujishige of the police auto theft detail.

Bu La‘ia accepts fine
for airport altercation

Comedian Kaui Hill, known as Bu La'ia, has been fined $300 for assaulting a security guard March 20 at Honolulu Airport.

Hill pleaded no contest to one count each of third-degree assault and violating public conduct law for using a skateboard at the airport.

The state dropped two counts of terroristic threatening.

Judge Fa'auuga To'oto'o, a District Court judge temporarily filling in at Circuit Court, allowed Hill to plead under a deferred acceptance of guilty plea arrangement.

If Hill stays out of trouble, he can have the assault conviction expunged from the record after one year and the public conduct violation expunged after six months.

Hill, 30, said earlier he had just returned from the mainland and was using his skateboard to transport his luggage when security guards confronted him.

He denied he was skateboarding. Security guards said he was, and a brief altercation took place.

U.S., Laos to cooperate on
new search for MIAs

Laotian and U.S. officials are conducting the first joint field activity of the year in eight Laotian provinces and the 32nd since January 1992.

A 40-member U.S. team led by Army Lt. Col. Dan Patterson will spend 31 days looking for Americans who have been missing in Laos since the Vietnam War.

Operations in seven Cambodian provinces, the 16th in that country since October 1991, are scheduled to last for 32 days.

The 18-member U.S. team in Cambodia is led by Air Force Lt. Col. Ned Laviolette.

A total of 2,134 Americans are still missing in Southeast Asia, 455 in Laos and 76 in Cambodia.

Two teens found
in stolen car

Two men, 18 and 19, were arrested for investigation of auto theft after the owner of a Toyota van stolen from a parking lot Monday saw his car being driven near Schofield Barracks yesterday afternoon.

The owner, who reported the theft at 9 a.m. yesterday, pulled the driver over around 3 p.m. on Wilikina Drive and Macomb Road. He and a friend confronted the driver and three passengers who fled, but not before the driver pulled out a shotgun from under his seat, police said.

Officers found the driver and a passenger hiding in bushes behind Hysells Gallery at 1640 Wilikina Drive. A 12-gauge pump shotgun loaded with three rounds was recovered.
