POSTER CONTEST

Marine art: The Waikiki Aquarium is looking for 1997 "Save the Reef" art by children in kindergarten through sixth grade. The theme is "Coral reefs are important because ..."

The contest is part of a campaign to raise awareness for the conservation of coral reefs around the world.

Children can use water-soluble paints, markers, colored pencils or crayons. Entries should not exceed 24 by 36 inches, and should not have three-dimensional elements that protrude or are loose. No frames, glass or folds.

Forms are available at schools and the Aquarium. Deadline is Feb. 17.

THURSDAY

Kaimuki Library: Preschool Storytime at 10:30 a.m. Thursdays through Feb. 27. Call 733-8422.

Aina Haina Library: Kids of all ages can enjoy read-aloud sessions with drawings for prizes 3 p.m. Thursdays in February and March in the auditorium. Co-sponsored by McDonald's of Aina Haina.

FRIDAY

Night reef walk: Explore the shore with Waikiki Aquarium staff, 7:30 to 10 p.m. Costs $8 adults, $7 children. Register by mail. Call 923-9741.

SATURDAY

Literacy Hukilau II: The Honolulu education department offers free, hands-on activities for parents and children 8 a.m. to noon at Kaimuki High School Auditorium. Lois-Ann Yamanaka, author of "Saturday Night at the Pahala Theatre" and "Wild Meat and the Bully Burgers," will share her stories of local life. Teachers and parents of teens can attend special workshops.

Whale Watch Weekend: Learn why the humpback whales come to Hawaii, see a training session at Sea Life Park then take a ride aboard the Navatek, Saturday and Sunday. The morning sessions cost $25 for ages 10 to 12, $35 ages 13 and up. Call 259-6476.

SUNDAY

Happy Habitats: Children ages 3 to 5 find out how and why animals pick their homes, 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Hawai'i Nature Center. Costs $7. Reserve at 955-0100.

Borders: Young Women's Career Series focuses on the cardiologist, 4 p.m. at the Waikele Center bookstore. For girls ages 8 to 14.

CONTINUING

"Na Mea Makamae" on display: Explore the "Treasures of Hawaii," rare objects as much as five centuries old, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at Bishop Museum through May 4. Admission is $14.95 general, $11.95 youths, seniors and military. Call 847-3511.

Tropical plant nature walk: 10 a.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. Sundays at Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden. Free. Call 233-7323 for reservations.

Train rides: Enjoy a 90-minute ride through Ewa 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. Sundays with the Hawaiian Railway Society, 91-1001 Renton Road. Costs $8 general, $5 seniors and children. Call 681-5461 for reservations.
