Rainbows hope to end
‘little crisis’ this week

The University of Hawaii men's volleyball team limped back home last night after suffering its worse straight-set loss in four seasons.

The Rainbows, ranked No. 3 in the AVCA coaches poll, were swept in 88 minutes by fifth-ranked Brigham Young, 15-8, 15-4, 15-7, in Provo Saturday night.

It was the lowest point total for Hawaii since a 15-9, 15-4, 15-8 defeat in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Southern Cal in 1994.

While it wasn't as bad as the 1993 loss at UCLA (15-3, 15-5, 15-5), it left the Rainbows reeling . . . and needing to regroup quickly.

Hawaii (4-3, 3-2) hosts No. 10 UC Santa Barbara (2-2, 2-1) in 7 p.m. MPSF matches Wednesday and Friday.

The Gauchos upset UCLA Friday night, 11-15, 15-10, 6-15, 17-16, 15-13, handing the Bruins only their fifth loss in 47 matches at the Wooden Center.

"If they beat UCLA, then they know how to play volleyball," Rainbow hitter Naveh Milo said last night. "We didn't know how good they (UCSB) would be after they lost four starters.

"As for us, it's a little crisis. But we have to look at the whole picture. We played six tough matches in 10 days. Nobody likes to lose, not like (Saturday). But the team is real tired, mentally and physically.

"With a little rest, we'll be ready by Wednesday."

Milo sat out Thursday's loss at Pepperdine with a strained left quadriceps. The junior hitter returned against the Cougars, hitting negative for the first time in his career (-.250) with only seven kills.

Senior Jason Ring again led Hawaii with 19 kills and 10 digs. Sivan Leoni added 10 kills and four blocks.

The Hawaii block was missing in action against a taller BYUteam, with the Cougars enjoying a 22-7 advantage.

Freshmen Oswald Antonetti had 19 kills and seven blocks and Kennan Vance added 11 block assists to lead BYU.

Also missing from the Rainbows' lineup was junior blocker Rick Tune, who broke his left thumb in two places in the match at Pepperdine Thursday. It was uncertain when Tune, who leads Hawaii in blocks, would be able to return.

The match drew 4,669 at the Smith Fieldhouse. Milo likened the atmosphere to the Special Events Arena, where the Rainbows are averaging 8,390.

"Their crowd pushed them very hard," said Milo. "They were very loud. It was almost like the arena. With us being ranked ahead of them, beating (us) was a prize for the crowd.

"I don't think we lost because the other team was that much better. It was a very long road trip and we need to get over these loses."

Hawaii, losing its second straight, now has as many losses as it did last season.

It was the first time since the 1995 final four had the Rainbows dropped two in a row.
