Punahou’s Uso
finally gets to pick Stanford

The Cardinal offer is what the
record-setting receiver
wanted all along

Tafiti Uso, the Star-Bulletin's All-State Offensive Player of the Year, has changed his college football scholarship commitment from Utah to Stanford.

The 6-foot-1, 178-pound record-breaking Punahou receiver said he got a phone call from Stanford coach Tyrone Willingham asking him if he was still interested.

Uso, who committed to Utah last week because he had been told by Stanford that he was "on the bubble" in their recruiting plans, said he was ecstatic.

"I was hoping they would come around," he said last night. "But I thought they already had their guys and I was ready to move on."

Uso said he expects to receive his papers this afternoon from the Cardinal. He will sign his letter of intent on Wednesday.

Uso has turned down the Utes, the University of Hawaii and Oregon State.

"I was told they play the best players, so if I do well this summer at camp, I'll play as a freshman," Uso said.

Uso, who broke the Interscholastic League of Honolulu single-season receiving yardage record, was considered one of Hawaii's fastest prep players.

Uso was honored Friday night at a banquet for outstanding athletes of Samoan heritage as one of three top scholar-athletes in his culture. He has a 3.2 grade-point average and scored 1330 on his SAT.
