Separate funds paid for
new cancer society offices

I donate to the American Cancer Society every year for medical research. Were any of these donations used for the new headquarters in Nuuanu that I read about in the Star-Bulletin on Jan. 17?

A resounding "no," said the American Cancer Society.

The $3.6 million cost of buying two structures and the land ($1.4 million), renovating it ($1.8 million) and buying equipment ($400,000) was financed "without using any funds from the annual (fund-raising) campaign and operating budget," said Bud Bowles, the organization's communications director.

Instead, large private donors were solicited for the capital campaign, he said.

Check out the headquarters at 2370 Nuuanu Ave. at an open house noon-5 p.m., Feb. 17-23.
