Silver screen treasures

The National Film Registry Tour of the Library of Congress comes to Hawaii for the first time at the Hawaii Theatre Feb. 20 through 23.

Created in 1988, the National Film Registry recognizes the richness of American filmmaking, and each year 25 culturally, historically or aesthetically significant films are added to it.

The series at the Hawaii Theatre includes not only national films, but Hawaii film treasures from the 1890s never before seen in the large-screen format. The schedule follows:

Feb. 20: "Letters from an Unknown Woman," 5:30 p.m.; "On the Waterfront," 8 p.m.

Feb. 21: Hawaii Film Treasures, 5:30 p.m.; Office Opening Program with Screening of Early Hawaii Footage, "What's Opera, Doc," and "Chinatown, 8 p.m."

Feb. 22: "Yankee Doodle Dandy," 10 a.m.; "I Was a Fugitive from a Chain Gang," 1 p.m.; "Gigi," 4 p.m.; "Raging Bull," 7 p.m.

Feb. 23: "Eaux D'Artifice," and "Dr. Strangelove (Or How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb)," 10 a.m.; Ninotchka, 1 p.m.; Silent Movies with John McCreary at the 1922 Robert Morton Organ, "The Great Train Robbery," "Big Business," and "Sunrise," 4 p.m.; "Touch of Evil," 8 p.m.

Tickets, available at the Hawaii Theatre box office or by calling 528-0506, are $4 per screening, $3 for senior citizens and students. The entire series is $20.



Look great, feel great

The 1997 Great Aloha Run Health & Fitness Expo will take place Feb. 14 through 16 at Blaisdell exhibition hall.

The show includes gymnastics competition and demonstrations, a strong-man contest, a karate tournament, acrobatics, health seminars and cooking demonstrations, diagnostic tests, health and medical displays as well as fitness equipment and workout gear displays.

Hours are 4 to 10 p.m. Feb. 14; 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Feb. 15; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 16.

Admission is $3 for adults; $2 for seniors and children 7 to 12; free for children under 7.

Serenade for loved one

Singer, songwriter and pianist Matt Yee will put on a one-man cabaret show at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 14 and 15 at Hawaii Public Radio's Atherton Performing Arts Studio.

The Valentine's Day performances will feature Yee's original music and songs on the joys and heartaches of being in love. Yee has been singing and playing the piano since he was 3 years old.

Tickets are $15, $12.50 for HPR members. Information: 955-8821.



Scholarship offered

The Portuguese Pioneer Civic Association is accepting scholarship applications from high school seniors and college students of Portuguese or part-Portuguese descent.

Applicants must be Oahu residents planning to attend a college or university on Oahu and have at least a 2.5 grade-point average.

Get applications by writing: Mr. Alfred Grilho, Scholarship Chairman, 66 Queen St., Suite 1704, Honolulu, HI 96813-4412. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped business-size envelope.

Applications must be postmarked by April 9.



Hiroshima connection

The Goto of Hiroshima Foundation will award a $5,000 grant to an individual interested in research regarding Hiroshima and Hawaii, or in Japanese culture, politics, economics or language. The grant features a research trip to Hiroshima.

Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 40, with preference given to anyone from the Honokaa region of the Big Island. The application deadline is May 9.

Established by Dr. Fumiko Kaya in memory of her uncle, the late Katsu Goto, the foundation's purpose is to foster understanding between Japan and America.

The grant will be administered by the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, and applications are available at the center at 2454 S. Beretania St. Call 945-7633.
